Head Lice Procedures

Stamford Jewish Community Center’s Policy on Head Lice

Head lice do no carry disease, nor does their presence indicate that a child is dirty. However, to prevent the spread in the classroom, this condition must be treated at once and is a pre-condition to return to the program. You are encouraged to follow the recommendations given below, or to consult with your doctor for his/her recommendations.

The administration has the sole discretion to allow the child to re-enter the classroom or program.

* Treatment: Purchase Rid or Nix

All persons in the household should be examined for the presence of head lice. If Lice or eggs are detected, all infested persons should undergo re-treament with the anti-lice shampoo.

* Procedure: Remove all clothing: Shampoo as directed on label. Put on clean clothes after shampooing

1. Wash (using very hot water or hot cycle of washing machine) all clothing, towel and bed linens used by all persons with head lice.

* Dry clean all clothing with hats that cannot be washed. An alternative suggested by other authorities calls for sealing garments in plastic bags for 35 days. Additionally, still other authorities suggest vacuuming all carpets, upholstery, and mattresses.

* Combs and brushes should be soaked in a pediculicidal solution for 10 minutes.

Re-treatment of all initially infested persons in 8 to 10 days is recommended by the U.S. Government’s Public Health Service to insure complete elimination of infestation. Your child will be rechecked at that time.
